About Starvation Creek Grove

Starvation Creek Grove is a 25-acre grove in the Tule and Kern River Watershed region, situated between 5,064 - 6,103 feet elevation at 35.93679°N. It is managed by Giant Sequoia National Monument/Sequoia National Forest and consists of two “units.” This includes western unit along Starvation Creek, which has a narrow stringer configuration, and an eastern unit that is compact. In 1984, Starvation Creek Grove made history as the nesting site of the last California condor born in the wild. It was once home to many old growth sequoias, like the Condor Nest Tree - a large sequoia with a snagtop that once served as a good nesting cavity for California condors. The grove was decimated by the 2021 Windy Fire, which burned almost entirely at high severity (97%). Only a handful of large giant sequoias remain today.
